Merchant said he doesn’t know why the elderly resident was taken to hospital.
Chief Timothy Jencks of the Taftville Volunteer Fire Company was in charge at the time of the fire and could not be reached for comment on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the American Red Cross said on Sunday the organization was helping five adults and their four families after the fire.
“Those affected will be contacting Red Cross social workers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan,” the press release read.
The merchant said the building was saved and most of the damage was to interior bathrooms. He said the fire started in the basement at the rear of the building and spread to the apartments.
“The fire was put out quickly,” Merchant said. “It was a quick reversal, but it took a complete overhaul to find the hidden fire.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
