Hospital services suspended after doctors and nurses test positive for COVID-19

Kolkata: Calcutta Medical College and Chittaranjan Cancer Medical College suspended operations and reduced the outdoor segment after several doctors and nurses were affected by Covid.

According to Calcutta Medical College sources, more than 300 doctors and nurses are affected by Covid for which there are hardly any nurses and doctors to treat the patients.

“Two to three doctors are only available to treat patients for whom operations are suspended until we have the adequate number of doctors. The field service will be open with some restrictions as doctors are not available to treat patients,” the Calcutta Medical College sources said.

Incidentally, on Friday, a total of 18,213 new Covid patients were reported, of which 7,484 patients with a 39.87% positivity rate were found in Kolkata alone.

At least 39 new doctors tested positive for Covid at Chittaranjan Cancer Medical College on Friday, following which even emergency services were partially suspended from this hospital.

“Several cancer patients have had to be discharged because doctors are not available to treat patients. Cancer is a terminal disease and must be treated properly. We cannot take new patients and also release admitted patients,” the hospital sources said.

According to Dr. Kajal Krishna Banik, the shortage of doctors will be more evident in the state as every day doctors are affected.

“We still have civic polls and Gangasagar Mela and despite raising awareness we have failed to get people to understand to stay indoors. The more people are affected to treat them, the more doctors will be affected,” Banik said.
