Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust partners with Hospital Services Limited (HSL) to improve Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) collaboration on orthopedic cases

Working in partnership with specialist distributor of bespoke healthcare IT solutions Hospital Services Limited (HSL) based in the East Midlands, the orthopedic team at Hampshire Hospitals have deployed an innovative solution to enable better collaboration between Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) located at multiple hospital sites and thus increasing the range of healthcare professional feedback on cases referred by the hospital’s orthopedic department. The solution has helped hospitals reduce travel and increase collaboration between regional multidisciplinary teams currently working across multiple sites.

Implemented in direct response to the remote work required during the Covid-19 pandemic, the system has been successfully adopted by the Hip MDT, Knee MDT and Upper Limb MDT, accommodating meetings of approximately 6 to 15 team members as well as seminars for up to 50 people and recently a large meeting with regional hospitals which hosted 104 participants. This format and size flexibility makes the solution an optimal platform not only for MDT meetings, but also for Hampshire hospital trainings and general assemblies, facilitating remote working as social distancing and remote working home remain important tools in the fight against the ongoing pandemic.

The Pexip Infinity-powered system that integrates with Microsoft Teams and Cisco equipment offers a highly simplified, easy-to-use system for busy healthcare professionals based across multiple locations and allows attendees to join a meeting via Microsoft Teams or from a meeting room or meeting scenario. using a Cisco system. Users can view all shared clinical data in a meeting room, working with the electronic patient record (EPD) to include all information in an ecosystem. A three-screen setup also allows participants to take control of the screen and “drive” the display, providing equal and secure access to EPR, imaging, and test results for all participants at the meeting, regardless of their location, making it an ideal tool. platform to host virtual orthopedic seminars.

Highlighting how increased collaboration through the virtual system is helping to improve the standard of patient care in Hampshire hospitals, a recent case was presented at Bath Hospital involving a young man who had previously been told he needed of a new knee. In collaboration with the MDT, the orthopedic team in Bath have taken advantage of the vast pool of knowledge available from consultants at Basingstoke, the Regional Center of Excellence for Osteotomy which organizes beneficial masterclasses for improving knowledge in the region for the benefit of patients, resulting in a definitive answer for the patient.

Reflecting on the success of this collaborative project between HSL and Hampshire Hospitals, Joanne Rix, Telehealth and Communications for HSL, said: “The objective of this project was to provide a video conferencing system for MDT meetings with 3 screens, a good quality camera and audio system. pick up to enable collaboration across the region. The HSL team worked closely with the consulting and IT teams at Hampshire hospitals to explore the best solution to meet all needs and future proof the communications function within the Trust. We are thrilled with the result – an easy to use and adaptable telehealth solution designed to encourage collaboration, sustainability and help improve the quality of patient care through additional case expert input.
