Florida’s HCA University Hospital completes its first craniotomy

August 23, 2022 – HCA Florida University Hospital, a 165-bed facility and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the state’s largest healthcare system, recently completed its first surgery for a blood clot in the brain.

The patient, 95-year-old Obdulia Pena, underwent burr hole drainage, a surgery involving a small incision and then drilling a small hole in the skull to release pressure on the brain. The procedure was performed by Dr. Steven Vanni, a top neurosurgeon with nearly 30 years of experience.

“In this case, the patient suffered an injury that resulted in a buildup of pressure in the brain,” said Dr. Steven Vanni. “The patient suffered from confusion, lethargy and weakness, but was previously a healthy, independent woman. Hopefully, this minimally invasive procedure will help her return to her normal, independent lifestyle.

HCA Florida University Hospital’s dedicated surgical floor features seven state-of-the-art surgical suites to perform both traditional and minimally invasive procedures. The facility’s highly skilled surgeons are able to use the latest technology and robotic techniques to perform complex operations with smaller incisions. Surgical patients prepare for and recover from surgeries in one of the hospital’s 18 private pre- and post-operative recovery rooms, located within walking distance of the operating rooms.

“We continue to lay the foundation to expand our neuroscience and spine program to include many areas of neurosurgery not yet available at University Hospital,” said Madeline Nava, CEO of HCA Florida. UniversityHospital. “Neurological injuries and conditions are among the most complex to treat, and we offer our patients a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach in a state-of-the-art hospital. »
